Wood-Fired 柴燒

 

Just leave it to the God of Wood-firing kiln

Wood-firing is a very old (and quite magic) technique, where pots enter the wood-firing kiln completely naked (without any glaze), and come out of the kiln with beautiful colors that are naturally created by the wood-firing ashes. The colors and effects vary a lot, depending on the minerals in the clay, type of wood you are burning, how long and where the flames hit the work, and where the ashes fall on the work. It’s the unexpected and uncontrollable about wood-firing that makes it so fascinating!

Like my other collections of work, I try to do something different about it. I like to marble earthenware and porcelain together because each will show distinctive colors after firing. And the marbling swirls give my work a very pretty look. I also like to apply some ash-based glazes that I formulated and let it work with the falling ashes in the kiln, which time after time gave me many surprises!

天然真淳,樸實中見豐富,內斂中見奔放

柴燒是一種古老的燒製技法,作品通常不上釉藥,燒成的色澤取決於土胎、火候和木灰的交融,藉由木頭融化成灰時落在作品上形成一種自然釉,再經過不斷的火燒引出各種顏色,有時一件作品甚至可以呈現七彩色澤,柴燒的迷人之處在於成品美感無法預期、也無法複製,色澤樸實中見豐富,質感內斂卻奔放。

我的柴燒作品的獨到之處有二:以陶土與瓷土絞胎,及獨家配方的灰釉。

將陶土與瓷土絞胎,兩種土會自然產生不同顏色,兩者相應成趣,絞胎形成的螺旋紋路在柴燒作品中亦算少見。我也喜歡在作品上施以少少自己調配的灰釉,讓它與落灰交互作用,時常帶來許多出人意料的驚喜效果。
